Открылся в 1972. За годы работы поставлено 8 осетинских национальных опер, первый осетинский балет - "Хетаг" Д.Хаханова, 11 осетинских оперетт. В репертуаре - мировая оперная классика, Дж.Верди, Дж.Пуччини, Ж.Бизе, П.Масканьи, В.А.Моцарт, Ш.Гуно, П.Чайковский, русские советские оперы и оперетты, балеты "Жизель" А.Адана, "Барышня и хулиган" Д.Шостаковича, "Мирандолина" С.Василенко, "Кармен-сюита" Ж.Бизе - Р.Щедрина. В 1985 был поставлен спектакль "Отелло", дирижер-постановщик - Валерий Гергиев. В театре в разное время работали режиссеры Ю.Леков, М.Цихиев, З.Бритаев, В.Канделаки, И.Фаликов, дирижеры В.Гергиев, П.Панасян, А.Брискин, художники Ю.Федоров, Н.Котов, Н.Левчук, балетмейстеры Г.Шаховская, Ю.Мячин, А.Голышев, В.Пашкевич.
